Can I connect the STAR overspeed governor coil directly to the 220V grid?

  No. Dynatech coils can be connected to 24V, 48V or 190V currents. All three coil types use direct current, and so cannot be connected to the grid, which uses alternating current. Connecting them to the grid will render them inoperational.   For the 190VDC (DC = direct current) coil, a bridge rectifier is needed to convert alternating current to a medium direct current value. For other coils, a transformer is needed to reduce the voltage to close to 24V or 48V, as well as a diode bridge rectifier and a filter capacitor.
